Read the following passage and answer questions 1 through 11. Snow Storm1 Thomas had a job working late nights after school in a local convenience store. Sometimes he worked on Saturdays or Sundays, but mostly he worked after school each day. At the store, he usually worked the cash register, checked in movies, and stocked the produce counter. He used the money he earned to pay for his car, an old black station wagon with lots of miles on it.2 One December morning, his parents told him not to go into work that evening. The weather forecasters were predicting a major snowstorm heading through, and the snowfall was expected to be heavy. Thomas didn’t heed his parents' advice and went in to work anyway.3 The snow began around 4:00 PM and the later it got, the harder it snowed. Thomas was wrapping lettuce at the produce counter when he realized that he might not be able to make it home. He had friends nearby to stay with, but he didn’t want to be snowed in for too long. He decided to wait things out a bit longer and see what happened.4 After dark, the snowfall became like a blizzard. He looked out the store windows towards his car. All that was visible was a snowy shell of a car. You could tell by the outline that there was a car underneath all that snow. Thomas wondered to himself whether the old black station wagon would be able to get him home. He began to have doubts.5 While Thomas was looking out the window, the telephone began to ring. It was the manager telling him to close and go home. Business was nonexistent, and there wasn’t any sense in staying any longer. Thomas realized that he probably couldn’t make it home. At first he was excited. What better place to be snowed in than a convenience store?6 As Thomas locked the store’s doors and began to count the money in the register, a red truck pulled up into the parking lot. Out stepped a much older man who resembled Thomas. They both had the same charcoal shade of hair. He came to the door and knocked on it. Thomas waved and let him in.7 Thomas grabbed some items from the store’s shelf and left a note with some money for the manager, indicating what he had taken. He put the money from the cash register into the safe, turned off the lights, and locked the doors. Grateful, he climbed into the red truck with the man and began the long journey home. 1. The Peanut Butter Story1 Although no one knows for certain where the idea of eating peanut butter came from, many people believe it began long ago in Africa. African farmers did grow peanuts on small farms. They used a heavy wooden mortar, which is a type of bowl, and a wooden pestle, which is like a thick stick, to pound shelled peanuts into a smooth paste. It is believed that this idea did not stop there.2 A few hundred years ago, a group of French settlers brought many people from Africa across the ocean to the island of Haiti. Once on the island, the French settlers forced them to work as slaves. The Africans ate mostly peanuts during the long, difficult voyage to Haiti. Some of them even hid a few peanuts when no one was looking. Then, when they got to Haiti, they planted them in the ground to avoid starving. As the plants grew, the people collected the peanuts and made peanut butter, just like they did back in Africa.Protein for Soldiers3 The idea of making peanut butter then spread from Haiti to the United States. Soldiers, during the Civil War, ate what they called "peanut porridge," which they made by pounding peanuts into a paste inside a cloth bag. Their peanut paste did not taste very good, but the soldiers ate it instead of meat. This provided protein since meat would spoil easily and was hard to come by during the war.Peanuts for Patients4 Some years after the Civil War, a doctor, who practiced in St. Louis, Missouri, decided to prepare peanut butter as a health food for some of his elderly patients. He did not pound the peanuts into a paste, but instead put them through a meat grinder. Other doctors began to do the same thing in order to provide protein for older patients who could not chew meat products, like steak, because of their poor teeth or missing teeth.Peanut Products5 About this same time, Dr. George Washington Carver, who was the son of a slave, conducted work in his laboratory as a plant scientist. He was looking for new ways to use peanuts, because up until then, most people just ate them plain or fed them to their pigs. Dr. Carver experimented with each part of the peanut from the shell to the seed. After numerous hours of work and experiments he discovered about 300 different things to make from peanuts. One of them happened to be a food much like peanut butter.Peanut Butter for Sale6 It was not long before companies started to sell peanut butter. When peanut butter was first sold, people bought it in scoops from grocery store barrels for about six cents a pound. Since then, companies have changed that method and now peanut butter is sold in jars. Today many of those same companies that started to make peanut butter over one hundred years ago are still going strong. No matter how it got started, peanut butter is a food enjoyed by many all over the world. 12.
