Text Structures Flocabulary Listen closely... How does this information compare to what you discussed in your groups yesterday? See if you can read the story below and fill in the blanks just THINKING about our activity yesterday and making sense of the Flocabulary video! There's a word bank below to help... you can do it! When you read informational text, you'll see patterns in the way that it's written, oh yes. There are five main structures you can check. Let's flex and break down all five. This first text structure is called Description . It describes the topic and its characteristics. You'll see "such as" and "for example," and details and adjectives .Now, peep hear this, the second structure... It's called Sequence . It gives events from way back to most recent. It contains dates and the words: "Next," "then ," "before," "first," "second" and "third."Cause and Effect is third way to organize. It's when authors tell what happened and why. Words like "because," "since," "if," "then ," "due to" mean that this text structure is coming right to you. There're two more text structures to go. Sometimes an author introduces a problem and then explains how somebody solved it. "The tower leaned more with each passing century. The tilt increased to more than five degrees. The people feared it would collapse into ruins. "Now, we know the problem, what's the solution?" Earth was removed from under the monument and weights were added to balance out the top of it. They corrected the lean, at least a little bit." That's Problem and Solution, not a riddle, kid. Just look out for the words involved: "Since," "question," "problem," "solution" and "solved ."I got another text, you don't have to ask and its text structure? Compare and Contrast It explains how things are different and the same. "Both the Tower of Pisa's construction and the Washington Monument's saw disruption. The Washington Monument, named after George, had construction paused for the Civil War. Like the Leaning Tower, it took years to finish, but the purposes of the buildings were different. One was erected as a church bell's tower, while the other honored a Founding Father." There we compared the two different towers. That's five text structures in a 16th of an hour! Sort You should have ONE definition, ONE set of key words, and ONE example for each text structure!! Use your notes!! Remember, THREE in each column! Description many adjectives, characteristics, or examples the author providesseveral details ofsomething to give thereader a mental picture The street was dark and quiet. In the distance, the sound of a barking dog and a honking horn cut through the silence. Somewhere nearby, someone was burning logs in a fireplace, and the smell of wood and smoke drifted through the neighborhood. Compare and Contrast similar, alike, same, just like, both, different, unlike, in contrast, on the other hand the author discussessimilarities and differencesbetween people, things, concepts, or ideas Many people appreciate the convenience of learning online and prefer to attend high school or college from their homes, using their computers. Both online and traditional courses have a professor, a class of other students, and use textbooks. However, while a traditional class requires students attend at a specific time each day, online courses are often asynchronous, which means students may check in at their own convenience to complete their work. Order and Sequence events in order of occurrence, instructions given step-by-step, order words (first, next, then, after that...) the author providesreaders withchronological events or alist of steps in aprocedure Before assembling the ingredients for her cake, Marigold turned on the oven to let it preheat. Next, she gathered flour, sugar, vanilla, butter, and eggs. After she assembled the ingredients she needed, Marigold found a mixing bowl and two cake pans. The then mixed the flour and sugar together. Then, she added the butter and eggs. Finally, she added the vanilla. Before pouring the batter into the cake pans, she coated the bottom of the pans with a bit of butter. Problem and Solution problem, solve, solution, should, instead the author givesinformation about aproblem and explains oneor more solutions When students move to a new community and a new school, it can be difficult for them to make friends--especially if they move in the middle of the year. Wilson Middle School has developed a Community Club that reaches out to new students for their first year at school. The Community Club invites new students to events where they can meet other students outside of the classroom. The club also provides every new student with a "buddy" who help the student navigate the school. Cause and Effect since, because, if, due to, as a result of, so, then, leads to, consequently the author describes anevent or several eventsand the events that follow In many American cities, there are homeless people. Homeless people do not have a permanent home and usually stay in shelters, with friends, in their cars, or even outside. There are many reasons why people might become homeless. For example, if a person loses his or her job, he or she may be unable to find another one for a long time. Because of this, it may become difficult to continue paying for a house or an apartment.
