Part 1 : 2nd Semester Vocabulary Assessment (bio, vit/viv, scrib/script, graph)
Select the BEST word to fit in the blank. (GRAPH-part 1) Alex and Bethany decided to write biographiesabout each other’s lives. Best friends since middle school, they had kept in touch after Alex moved to California to test a new seismographthat could help predict when and where an earthquake might strike next. Bethany, on the other hand, had traveled from one end of the Earth to the other. Her knowledge of cartographykept her busy recording the locations of previously undiscovered islands, and her talent with photographycaptured her journey around the world with beautiful images of sunsets and wildlife. After reading the first paragraph Alex wrote about her, Bethany was not pleased at all! Alex used all sorts of confusing homographsin her writing; sure, she had hit a bat with a bat, but was it really that important? Select the BEST word to fit in the blank. (GRAPH-part 2) Bethany decided to write her own life story. She put her favorite record album on her grandmother’s old phonographand dusted off her grandfather’s typewriter. After a year of daily writing, her autobiographywas written. She made sure to include a bibliographyso that all of her readers would know where her information came from. Within a month, it was on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Everywhere she went, fans asked for her autograph. (SCRIB part 1 For homework, Anthony had to describehis favorite story. Unfortunately, his writing often resembled a scribble, so he decided to have his buddy, Will, transcribehis writing after reading it into voice memos. Will had a subscriptionto a magazine called Boys’ Life that shared survival stories, and Anthony's story reminded him of his favorite book from fifth grade called Hatchet. (SCRIB part 2 Anthony was really hoping that the book would be made into a movie, so he e-mailed Gary Paulsen to ask him for the manuscriptof the book. His friend, Shawn, wanted to be a movie director some day and thought they might work together to write a scriptfor the movie. They asked Shawn to be their scribe, and before they knew it, he had written down all of their notes. They sent it off in the mail to Dreamworks Studios in Hollywood. Unfortunately, they had worked so diligently that they all got sick and had to get a prescriptionfrom the local Walmart to get well. Three weeks later, they received a letter in the mail from Steven Spielberg. He loved the story and wanted to use what they had sent him. In a postscriptat the bottom of the letter, he told them they would each receive $1,000,000 if the movie was a success. Today, at Chardon Middle School, if you go down to the trophy case, you will see an Emmy Award with an inscriptionthat says, “Dream big!” (bio) - part 1 As I was sprawled on the couch in the middle of the day, sunlight draped across my lap that held my laptop. I was contemplating ways to write my autobiographythat was due in three weeks. I was frustrated because all I wanted to do was study neurobiology. For months, I have had an interest about how the body works with the nervous system ever since my best friend, Susie, had a biopsyand was diagnosed with a cancer that attacks the nerves. At first, the doctors had tried giving her an antibiotic, but it did nothing. After exhausting many other ideas, Susie had decided to take things into her own hands and explore a macrobiotic diet. Thankfully, the dark leafy greens seemed to be helping to give her more strength. (bio) My plan had been to write her biography, but my teacher had other ideas. He was a biologistwho felt biologywas the only thing that existed in this biosphere. His studies included the symbiosisbetween flamingos and plankton. Unfortunately, his other passion was learning about his students, and my project was due in three weeks. Once I finish this project, THEN I will focus on helping my dear friend. My laptop is calling to me ...I guess it is time to get typing! (viv While the vivacious 13-year-old, Veronica, paraded through the antique store, she had one thing on her mind. She was intent on finding the perfect specimen for her latest project. Her plan was to revitalize an old sofa to put in her newly remodeled “girls only” space in the basement. When she found the sofa, she painted and reupholstered it a vividgreen that would accent the purple walls. It was vitalshe find a sofa so she could launch her plan into action... (viv part 2 It was a matter of survival. Her older brother, Joseph, kept bothering her whenever she had friends over. One time, he decided it would be hysterical to show Julia and Sophie a vivisectionof a frog a biologist had performed on YouTube to save it from an injury it had. In an instant, Veronica had had to reviveJulia after she fell to the floor after the sight of blood had caused her to faint! After such a fright, Julia, who was normally full of vitality, was required to take a special vitamineach day to help her energy level stay strong. Veronica knew it was the only way she and her friends would be survivorsagainst the onslaught of her brother’s pranks was to have a space where he was banned to enter. Thankfully, her parents had promised to enforce the new rule....Aha! As Veronica circled through the last room in the antique store, she found the perfect sofa. It was going to be a wonderful day!
