Percy, Annabeth, and Grover wander through the woods until they come across a store called “Aunty Em’s Garden Gnome Emporium”. Lured by the smell of food, the three go inside and meet Aunty Em, who makes them hamburgers to eat for no charge. She tells Percy that she’s been living alone ever since her two sisters died after a horrible accident caused by a woman jealous of Aunty Em’s boyfriend. Annabeth and Grover try to get Percy to leave, but Aunty Em asks them to pose for a photograph. Just before she snaps the camera, Annabeth shoves the other two to the ground. Percy sees Aunty Em’s reflection and realizes she is actually Medusa, a gorgon who could turn people to stone by making eye-contact. Percy also remembers that the hero he is named after, Perseus, was the one who killed her, but she was asleep at the time. Annabeth gives Percy reflective garden orb, which he uses to carefully approach the monster without looking at her directly. He manages to cut her head off, which Annabeth covers with her veil. Percy goes to find a box to put it in and finds a note that says a place in Los Angeles called DOA Recording studio is the entrance to the Underworld. He puts the head in the box and sends it to Mount Olympus. Grover warns it’s not a good idea, but Percy says he doesn’t care. At the end of Chapter 11: Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium, Percy puts something strange into a cardboard box and ships it off. The Myth of Medusa Part 1 - Becoming a MonsterThere was once a beautiful woman known as Medusa living in ancient Greece. One day, as she was walking along the beach, she met a charming man. This man was Poseidon, the Greek god of the Sea. The two hit it off and spent the day together. As the sky grew dark, Poseidon and Medusa went into the city and stopped in a temple of Athena. The ancient Greeks had very strict rules about appropriate behavior in a temple. People were supposed to be quiet and respectful so they didn't upset a god or goddess, who could see and hear anything that took place in their temple. But Poseidon didn't care, because he was mad at Athena for stealing Athens. To make Athena angry, he began to kiss Medusa in Athena's temple.Because they were in a temple of Athena, Athena herself was able to see them even though she was miles away. She was disgusted at the sight and decided to do something about it. As Poseidon kissed Medusa, something odd happened. Her hands suddenly turned to talons, and her skin became scaly, and her beautiful hair turned to snakes. Shocked that Athena would resort to such an extreme response, Poseidon quickly left, leaving Medusa all alone. When the humans saw Medusa's new gorgon form, they yelled in fear and tried to attack her. Medusa fled from town and hid in a nearby cave. The only people brave enough to approach her were her two sisters, who brought her food and water. Over time, after spending so much time with Medusa, they also turned into gorgons. And so the cave became known as a home to three gorgons. But of these three gorgons, Medusa was special. Medusa had a special power that turned anyone she looked at into stone. Her sisters became immune after turning into gorgons, but any human who looked her in the eye would become a statue. And so it was said that Medusa used her eyes to punish the humans who shunned her and became known as a terrible monster.Part 2 - Slaying the MonsterYears later, a young demigod named Perseus was sent on a quest. He was a son of Zeus who had been ordered by King Polydectes to slay the gorgon Medusa. Perseus was brave, but he was smart enough to know that a creature who could turn him into stone was dangerous. He prayed to his father Zeus for guidance and received help from the Greek gods to aid him on his quest. Hermes appeared and gifted him a set of shoes with wings that would let him fly. Athena gifted him a helmet that would turn him invisible, just like Hades' Helm of Darkness. Athena also guided Perseus on where to find a reflective shield that was so shiny it would work like a mirror.Perseus found the shield and used his cleverness to find Medusa's secret cave. When he snuck into the cave, he was lucky- Medusa was asleep. Perseus knew he couldn't risk her waking up and turning him into stone, so he held his reflective shield facing him and walked backwards. If Medusa woke up, he would not be turned into stone because he was not making direct eye contact with her. Luckily, Medusa did not wake up, and Perseus skillfully swung his sword backwards and cut off her head.Perseus then carried Medusa's head back and saved his mother, who was being chased by King Polydectes. With his quest complete, he gave Medusa's head to Athena as a gift. Athena accepted Medusa's head and placed it on her aegis, or shield. When Athena went into battle, her enemies would be temporarily stunned by the image on the shield, allowing her to cut them down quickly. Part 1 - Who did Medusa go on a date with?
