Monkeys Millions of people visit the zoo each year. Large crowds always seem to gather in front of the monkey areas to watch these funny, wonderful animals at play. The first monkeylike animals appeared millions of years ago. They were about the size of rats or mice and had warm blood. They also had fur to cover their body. These animals slept in the daytime and lived high above the ground in trees. Over the years, they grew to become the monkeys we see today. Most monkeys live in places that are warm throughout every month of the year. These places must have trees and plenty of food. A large monkey may need several bananas to fill its stomach! Monkeys live in groups. Sometimes the group is divided into families. Each family contains a father, a mother, and even a sister and brother. Monkeys watch out for one another. If one of the animals should discover danger, it will call out an alarm to the other monkeys. Monkeys are very smart. They take in information like a sponge soaking up water. When a monkey is taught how to do a new task, the monkey repeats it with few mistakes. Rhesus monkeys have even been used in space flights! Some scientists have won awards for work done with rhesus monkeys. Even though monkeys are among the best-loved animals in the world, the number of monkeys grows smaller each year. One reason is that they are losing their homes. Jungles that once were large places for many monkeys to live are being cut down. Also, some monkeys are killed for their fur, which is worth a lot of money. What is being done to stop the killing of monkeys? Laws to protect them are often helpful. Many people feel it would be wrong to do nothing to save the monkeys. What do you think? Proofreading: Rewrite the sentences below, correcting the 10 mistakes. 1.
