Nuts and Bolts Match the following terms with their meanings. Homogeneous is a mixture where the components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same throughout. There is only one phase of matter observed in a homogeneous mixture. So, you wouldn't observe both a liquid and a gas or a liquid and a solid in this mixture. Heterogeneous is a mixture where the components of the mixture are not uniform. Different samples from the mixture are not identical to each other. Atom the basic unit of a chemical element. Molecule a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. Element each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances. Compound made up or consisting of two or more existing elements. MIxture when two or more substances are combined such that each substance retains its own chemical identity. Ex. Flour and sugar added together. Substance is matter which has a specific composition and specific properties. (All elements and compounds are this.) Chemistry the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances. Matter the substance or substances of which any physical object consists or is composed: Nuts and Bolts, Elements and Compounds Using the petri dishes located at station 1, 3, 5 and 7. (Same sets exist at all). Fill out the following table. Petri Dish # Atoms, Molecules, or Both are present. Contents (pick one) represent an element, mixture or a compound. Contents (pick one) are a substance or not a substance. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Compound, mixture or element? Using the petri dishes labeled A through I, tell me if they are a mixture, compound or element. (HINT: Look at the names of items in them.) Petri Dish Sample Matter Present Mixture, compound, or element. (Can be two of them) A Magnesium Metal (Mg) element B Calcium chloride in water (CaCl2 in H2O) compounds, mixture C Table salt in sulfur (NaCl and S) element, compound D Magnesium, copper, and zinc metals (Mg, Cu, Zn) elements, mixture E Sodium Carbonate (NaHCO3) (Hint, think of the CO3 as a bolt) compound F Oxygen gas (O2) compound G Table Salt (NaCl) compound H Copper and zinc metals ( Cu and Zn) element, mixture I Sulfur (S) element
