Explore Earth's diverse biomes! Learn about climate, adaptations, and life in this interactive webquest.

What is a Biome? The world is made up of many different biomes. Biomes are large regions of the world with similar plants, animals, and other living things that are adapted to the climate and other conditions.Biomes are a community of plants and animals that have common characteristics for the environment they exist in. They can be found over a range of continents. Biomes are distinct biological communities that have formed in response to a shared physical climate. The unique climate and living conditions of each biome create wide variety on our wonderful planet. Within each biome, the living organisms have adaptations to help them survive in these sometimes extreme environments. For example, a rabbit in the tundra may have larger feet to hop on the snow and white fur to hide from its enemies. You will learn about Biotic, Abiotic, and Biodiversity.Abiotic components include physical conditions and non-living resources that affect living organisms in terms of growth, maintenance, and reproduction.Biotic factors, can be described as any living component that affects another organism or shapes the ecosystem. This includes both animals that consume other organisms within their ecosystem, and the organism that is being consumed. Biotic factors also include human influence, pathogens, and disease outbreaks.Biodiversity is the variety and variability of life on Earth. Biodiversity is typically a measure of variation at the genetic, species, and ecosystem levelThe unique climate and living conditions of each biome create wide variety on our wonderful planet. Learn about it! Watch this video to explore some of the terms below. The text book is also linked to "Read About It" if you like to read. Read About It Use our online textbook to explore some biomes and answer the questions below Biome A large group of ecosystems that share the same type of climax community. Marine Biomes Including parts of the ocean with varying salinity, light levels, and temperatures. It contains microscopic organisms as well as some of the largest creatures on the planet. Freshwater Lacking the salinity with layers of water with the coldest most dense water on the bottom. Latitude The distance from the equator which get different angles of sunlight causing changes in climate Precipitation and Temperature Precipitation (rainfall) and Temperature are the two abiotic components that determine which biome you are in.Find the correct temperature and precipitation rates for each of the biomes Biome Temperature in degrees C Precipitation in cm annually Desert -10 to 30 0-50 Tundra -15 to -10 0-100 Taiga -8 to 5 10-200 Temperate Forest 0-18 30-240 Tropical Rain Forest 18-27 240-450 Match the graph to the right biome: Green is temperature, Blue is precipitation Taiga Tundra Temperate Forest Rainforest What biome is this? Taiga Tundra Temperate Forest Rainforest Match the following biome Taiga Tundra Temperate Forest Rainforest Match the following biome Tundra Taiga Temperate Forest Rainforest Design A Critter Every organism that lives in a biome has a unique niche (strategies for survival) for their habitats... Even the habitats within the biome can have variety:Choose any biome from our work so far and describe (in detail) an imaginary creature that would be perfectly suited for this environment. Let's Play Click the link above and we'll try to match some graphs... How high can we get our class score??? Review the Biomes through video Watch this video to remind yourself about information you should be able to answer about biomes. Here are some additional websites to help you explore biomes if you need additional information: RainforestTemperate forestTaigaTundraDesertGrassland Spring Break!!!! Let's pretend there's NOT a global pandemic for a second... Choose any place in the world and click this link to fly there. Where did you go? What's the temperature during spring break? What's the precipitation during spring break? What are the three animals you're most excited to photograph? What are three plants you're most excited to photograph? Instafamous Take this dream vaca virtually: Design an instagram, snapchat, or facebook story or page to document your adventure and make your friends jealous... (isn't that the point of social media afterall?) Complete this any google based tech and share your link below. (make sure your sharing settings are public so I can see it). Let's sum it up and review. You CAN use your google classroom resources while answering the questions below The biome known for trees with broad leaves that shed in the fall Desert Tropical Rainforest Tundra Temperate Deciduous Forest What are the two abiotic characteristics that make up a biome Precipitation and sunlight Temperature and precipitation Diversity and temperature Sunlight and diversity Which of the biomes has the lowest temperature and precipitation? Tundra Temperate Rainforest Desert Boreal Forest What term is given by ecologists to the living parts of an ecosystem? Biotic Community Abiotic Qualitative Match each description to its vocab Coyote Organism Coyotes Population Coyotes AND Rabbits Community Coyote, Rabbits, Wind, and Rain Ecosystem Which Biome is most like the desert in terms of precipitation? Temperate Deciduous Forest Taiga Tundra Grasslands Adaptations of desert animals that help them survive in the hot, dry desert often include searching for water at midday in the hot sun waiting patiently for rain searching for food and water at night to prevent water loss A biome that has high rain and humidity and the most biodiversity. tundra taiga deciduous forest tropical rainforest Review the types of relationships Symbiosis The term meaning all types of relationships in the community that aren't predator Commensalism When one organism benefits and the other isn't harmed or helped Mutualism When two organisms interact and both benefit Parasitism When two organism interact and one benefits while the other is harmed but usually not killed.
