Cell Analogy Project
Warm Up: A School is like an Animal Cell. Match the functions. Match the functions of the organelles to the parts of a school. Custodians - The custodians work to clean up the school. Lysosome - The lysosomes contain digestive enzymes to eliminate wastes and break down “food”. Front buzzer - The front buzzer controls who comes into and out of the school. Cell Membrane - The cell membrane controls what enters and leaves the cell. Hallways - The hallways are pathways that students use to move from one classroom to the next. ER - The endoplasmic reticulum moves proteins around to different parts of the cell. Lunch room - The lunch room provides the students with food that will help to “power” their day. Mitochondria - The mitochondria is the “powerhouse of the cell”. It is where energy is made. Knowledge - The main goal of the school is to provide knowledge to the students. Protein - Protein is one of the main products of a cell. Office - The office takes messages and prepares them to be sent out to teachers or students and may make notes for the students to take home. Golgi - The golgi modifies, sorts and repackages proteins and prepares them for use or export. Principal - The principal controls the activities of the school. Nucleus - The nucleus is the control center of the cell and directs all activities. Teachers - The teachers create lesson plans and activities for the students. Ribosome - The ribosomes make proteins. Walls - The walls surround all of the students and contain the classroom where learning will occur. Cytoplasm - The cytoplasm surrounds all of the organelles of the cell and is a site of chemical reactions. Cell Analogy When we are trying to teach someone a new complex idea or concept, it is helpful to compare it to something similar. One way of making a model is to make an analogy to something else that is easier to understand. Analogies can be very helpful in science. They use something we're familiar with to help us understand something we're less familiar with.Discussion:How are a beehive and an apartment building similar?Analogies do not always express how similar two things look physically, but also how similar they are in function. For example, the beehive “rooms” are like the rooms in the apartment building. The walls have similar functions keeping each “room” in the hive separate from the rooms in an apartment.Discussion:How are a bird and an airplane similar? My Cell Analogy For this project, you will choose some kind of a system from the real world or one from your imagination that you can describe in vivid detail. Refer to the school matching example for clarification.Type the System you chose (ex. Car) at the top of the document below. Then, type the name of the component of the system that is similar to each cell organelle. What is one takeaway you learned?
