They stop by a drive-in and catch up with other Greasers they know and watch a fight, but leave when they pull out switchblades. The boys eventually make it to the Nightly Double, a drive-in movie theater. Dally sits behind two Soc girls and starts saying dirty things to bother them. The redhead girl threatens to call the cops , but Dally just smiles and offers to get them some drinks. After he leaves, Ponyboy talks to the redhead girl, whose nickname is Cherry and is a cheerleader at their high school. Johnny and Dally come back, and Dally gives both the girls some drinks. Cherry responds by throwing it in Dally’s face. Dally goes to grab her, but Johnny suddenly tells him to leave her alone. Dally is upset, but can’t do anything because Johnny is the gang’s pet, so he leaves. Cherry invites Ponyboy and Johnny to sit with her and Marcia. The four chat, and the girls explain that they came to the movies with their boyfriends, but left when they pulled out some alcohol. Two-Bit shows up and says that Tim Shepherd and his gang of Greasers are looking for Dally because he slashed their tires. Ponyboy mentions that Dally doesn’t currently have a blade, and Two-Bit says Tim will fight “fair” if that’s the case. Cherry and Marcia ask if the boys play “rough”, and Two-Bit brushes them off, saying that “skin” fighting, or fighting without weapons, isn’t rough- it’s just a way to blow off steam. Cherry and Ponyboy go to the concessions stands for snacks, and Cherry asks why Johnny acts hurt and scared. Ponyboy has a flashback and tells her about the time they found Johnny’s bloody jacket on the ground in an open lot. They saw a trail of blood and followed the trail to find Johnny. He had been badly beaten up, saying he had been attacked by a group of boys in a blue Mustang. One of the boys was wearing a lot of rings on his hand , and that’s what had cut his face up so badly. Johnny recovered, but Ponyboy notices that he is more paranoid than before, and he starts carrying a six-inch-switchblade. Ponyboy is certain that Johnny would kill the next person who tried to jump him out of fear. Cherry is horrified by the story and tells Ponyboy that not all Socs are like that. She says they have troubles too, and how things are rough all over. At the time, Ponyboy thinks to himself that it would be nice to have the problems Socs have, but reveals to the reader that he now knows better.
