People lived next to four main rivers: Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Indus, and the Huang-He.The Nile is located in Egypt, and is the longest river in the world. The Egyptians used hieroglyphics as their form of writing. Historians were able to translate the meanings of hieroglyphics using the Rosetta Stone. They built buildings called pyramids as tombs for the Pharaohs. In the government, the Pharaoh had all of the power. The river would flood and leave behind silt called the Gift of the Nile. Silt is really good soil so that is why they called it a gift. The Tigris-Euphrates River is located in the Middle East. This river valley is made up of 2 rivers, but they eventually become one river as they flow into the Persian Gulf. The land between the rivers was called Mesopotamia, which is a Greek word that means land between two rivers. This river valley used cuneiform as their form of written language. Rather than having one central government, they were a collection of independent city-states. In the governments, kings and priests held the most power. The first written laws in history were written in Mesopotamia, and were called The Code of Hammurabi. This law basically stated that whatever you did would happen to you. They built structures called ziggurats, which were government buildings and temples for their many gods.
