Name Write your full name Relative Age Dating VS. Absolute Age Dating Read the sentences. Decide if they describe relative-age dating, or absolute-age dating. Relative Age Dating This is a qualitative method of dating. This method uses strati-graphic methods to determine the age of remains. This method uses rock layers to determine the age of fossils. Absolute Age Dating This is a quantitative method of dating. This method uses radiometric methods to determine the age of remains. This method uses isotopes to determine the age of fossils. Types of Adaptations Tell if the adaptation is structural, behavioral, or functional Structural Functional Adaptation and Evolution Vocabulary Match the term with the definition Adaptation a characteristic of a species that enables the species to survive in its environment Variations Differences between species Natural Selection the process by which populations of organisms with survival variations live longer and reproduce more than other populations without the variation Selective Breeding breeding of organisms for desired characteristics Evolution the way an organism changes over time in response to its environment Behavioral adaptations the things organisms do to survive: for example - bird calls and migration Structure of bacteria Look at the picture, describe the function of each bacterial structure Involved in reproduction and cell to cell contact Enables movement Translates mRNA to protein Read the paragraph on viruses and fill in the blanks. A virus is simply a strand of DNA or RNA surrounded by a layer of protein. Viruses do not have all the characteristics to be considered a living organism, and must be inside a cell to replicate. Once viruses enter a cell they can either be active or latent (inactive). Once active, the virus takes control of the host cell and replicates, which ultimately destroys the host cell. Copies of the virus are then released into the host organism, where they can infect other cells. One way to fight a virus is to acquire immunity, which means your body has made special proteins called antibodies that attach to the virus and prevent them from attaching to a host cell, making it useless. Another way to prevent viruses is through the use of vaccines, which trigger the production of antibodies with the use of deactivated pathogens.
