What do you know about the history of biology? How and when did it appear as a scientific field? Think and answer Read the text quickly and write the developmental stages of biology as a scientific discipline The history of biology Thehistory of biologytraces the study of theliving worldfromancienttomoderntimes. Although the concept ofbiologyas a single field arose in the19th century, the biological sciences emerged fromtraditions of medicineandnatural historyreaching back to ancient Egyptian medicineand the works ofAristotleandGalenin the ancientGreco-Roman world. This ancient work was further developed in the Middle Ages byMuslim physiciansand scholars such asAvicenna. During the EuropeanRenaissanceand early modern period, biological thought was revolutionized in Europe by the discovery of many organisms. Prominent in this movement wereVesaliusandHarvey, who used experimentation and careful observation in physiology, and naturalists such asLinnaeusandBuffonwho began toclassify living organisms, as well as the development and behavior of organisms.Antonie van Leeuwenhoekrevealed by means ofmicroscopythe previously unknown world of microorganisms, that later led to the development of cell theory.Over the 18th and 19th centuries, biological sciences such as botany and zoology became increasingly professional scientific disciplines. Lavoisier and other physical scientists began to connect the animate and inanimate worlds through physics and chemistry. Explorer-naturalists such as Alexander von Humboldt investigated the interaction between organisms and their environment, and the ways this relationship depends on geography. These developments, as well as the results from embryology and paleontology, were shown in Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. In the early 20th century, the rediscovery of Mendel's work led to the rapid development of genetics by Thomas Hunt Morgan and his students. New disciplines developed rapidly, especially after Watson and Crick proposed the structure of DNA. Following that, biology was divided into organismal biology—the fields that deal with whole organisms and groups of organisms—and the fields related to cellular and molecular biology.By the late 20th century, new fields like genomics and proteomics were changing this trend, with organismal biologists using molecular techniques, and molecular and cell biologists investigating the relationship between genes and the environment, as well as the genetics of natural populations of organisms. Task 1 Read the text again and write True or False 1) Biology as scince appeared in the late 19th century True False 2) Biology was further developed in the Middle Ages by the encounter of various living organisms True False 3) Alexander von Humboldt studied the interconnection between organisms and their habitat True False 4) Due to the rediscovery of Mendel's work, genetics started to develop intensively True False 5) Molecular biologists study the relation between the environment and genes True False Match the events in the history of biology with their time periods the theory of evolution the 18th-19th centuries the development of genetics the early 20th century the emergence of genomics the late 20th century the classification of living organisms European Renaissance Formative Assessment Write a summary of the text 1) It should include of the necessary information from the passage2) No more than 6-7 sentences
