Balanced vs Unbalanced ForcesHave you ever had an arm wrestling competition with someone? If you compete against someone who is just about as strong as you are, there will probably be a time when both of you are pushing as hard as you can, but your arms stay in the same place. This is an example of balanced forces. They are opposite in direction, and equal in size.Another great place to see balanced forces in action is in a tug of war. In this case the forces are moving away from each other. If the two teams have equal strength, or force, the rope will stay pretty much in the same place. The rope (and the people) keep on doing what they were doing – as long as they keep pulling with balanced (equal and opposite) forces.Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion. Balanced forces KEEP DOING what they were doing. When forces are balanced, there is NO CHANGE in the object’s motion:Unbalanced Forces:But if the teams are mismatched (the forces are UNBALANCED), then there will be a change in motion – and they all move to the left, with 100 Newtons of force.
