Topographic Map Practice
The distance between two contour lines is called a contour interval. The contour interval is used to show the change of elevationin meters or feet from one contour line to the next adjacent line. The closertogether the contour lines, the steeperthe slope. The further apart the contour lines, the more gradual the slope. To determine the interval between contour lines, find a bold, labeled line, called an index contour, and note its elevation.Rivers are always shown on topographic maps as a line running perpendicular to contour lines. These lines bend, or “V”, upstream, meaning that the point of the V points toward the source. When the contour lines are closer together the incline is steeper.
