The substrate binds to the active site of an enzyme to cause a reaction to occur. The molecules that are produced are called products. Enzymes work by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, causing it to occur faster. Environmental conditions can cause an enzyme to denature, or unfold, which causes it to no longer function properly. Two of these conditions are changes in pH and in temperature.
