When someone with testes ejaculates, semen containing millions of sperm leaves their penis in spurts. In order for someone to get pregnant, the sperm need to enter another person's vagina either through intercourse or with the help of a doctor. The sperm travel through the vagina and uterus searching for the egg in the fallopian tubes. If there is a ripe egg in one of the tubes, one sperm may enter the egg. When the 2 gametes combine, it is called fertilization and the new cell is called a zygote. It begins to divide rapidly and new identical cells form through mitosis as it travels to the uterus. When the fertilized egg reaches the uterus and attaches to the lining, pregnancy begins.For the first 8 weeks of pregnancy, the new organism is called an embryo. The embryo will continue to grow and develop for the next 9 months until it is ready to be born. Early in development, membranes that feed and protect the embryo begin to develop. A membrane called the filled with amniotic fluid encloses and protects the embryo. The placenta also forms and is connected to the uterus and is a structure through which the mother feeds the embryo. The umbilical cord connects the placenta to the embryo. Blood vessels in the umbilical cord transport nutrients and wastes between the parent’s blood and embryo’s blood. Their blood doesn’t mix but substances in the parent’s blood pass to the embryo through the placenta. This includes things like oxygen and dissolved nutrients. The embryo returns the waste and carbon dioxide to the parent to be removed. Because things in the blood from the parent passes to the child, the parent needs to eat healthfully and avoid drugs and alcohol. As development continues, the embryo grows until it’s called a fetus. After 9 months, a baby is born. Pregnancy and having a child is a wonderful event for mature couples in serious relationships. But it is not a healthy choice for teens your age.
