Factors that influenced Romanticism Romanticism was birthed from a number of factors in America. One of the main historical factors was the Western expansion, which referred to settlers and explorers moving further into he Western part of the country. This led to the displacement of Native Americans as the whites took over more and more land. The Manifest Destiny was the idea the United States was destined to conquer Mexican territory. The Mexican-American war inspired early Romantic writers such a Henry David Thoreau. The growth of the industrial industry was also a leading factor in the rise of Romanticism as more Americans shifted from agrarian work to industrial work. The shift from a simple lifestyle to the hard working conditions of factories, along with moving further away from nature inspired Romantic writers to turn to nature and to the self for simplicity, beauty and truth.
