The Science of Fireworks Have you ever wondered what gives fireworks different colors? The color of a firework relates to the atoms that compose the firework and their electrons. Watch the video to learn about how electrons can move around in the atom to create the colorful fireworks we see on the 4th of July. The electron configurations we have been writing represent electrons in the ground state, or electrons in their lowest energy levels. According to Bohr electrons are able to jump from principal energy levels in the atom. When an electron gains energy it adopts an excited state configuration.
