A popular choice is interrailing around Europe; there are InterRail passes for a week and up to a month, ranging from as little as £152 to £365. Interrailing is an amazingly social experience, which, in my opinion, is unlike any other. Then there is backpacking. You could, should you wish to, hitchhike and set up camp on the sides of roads, but in many countries, travel is cheap enough to suit even the most economically-minded globetrotter and it's possible to stay in pleasant accommodation for no more than you'd be paying for rent at university. Money buys happinessThere has always been an assumption that the more money you have, the happier you are, but until now a direct link between wealth and joy has not been proven. However, findings from a study carried out by researchers at the University of Warwick prove beyond doubt that money does indeed buy you happiness. The study, based on interviews with 9,000 families, looked at the effects of windfalls such as a lottery win or the receipt of an inheritance on people's well-being. At the end of a ten-year investigation, what the researchers found was that receiving just £1,000 is sufficient to change the average person's outlook on life, although it would take at least £1 million to jump from being depressed and dissatisfied to being very happy and content. And, of course, a millionaire would require considerably more for the same effect to occur. Creature comfortsPiglets must be kept warm in their first few days to discourage them from snuggling up to their mother. That's because 80 per cent or so of piglet deaths occur during that period, and most of them are due to the sow rolling over and crushing her young. In an effort to tackle this problem, the trend in porcine interior design is away from unhygienic straw and towards underfloor heating or infrared lamps. But these approaches leave piglets with only an uninviting concrete floor to lie on. The hard surface also aggravates the injuries that piglets often suffer while fighting for position at feeding times.To find a solution, researchers studied the behaviour and weight gain of almost 1,400 piglets held in pens with a variety of heating schemes. Very nearly all of the piglets preferred warm waterbeds to any of the alternatives, spending well over half the day lying about on them. Interestingly for farmers, the piglets on the waterbeds not only developed fewer skin lesions, but also gained significantly more weight than those kept on concrete.
