First create an Explore Learning Gizmos account by following directions in this weeks Potential Kinetic Energy slideshow. Then stay on the Gizmo website and open Energy Conversions from your Gizmos account class page. NOTE: Below is a PICTURE of what it looks like, NOT THE ACTUAL SIMULATION In the Gizmo simulation, change the mode to "Path mode" by clicking the radial button as shown here:Type one word answers below and start it with a capital letter. Note: #4 has a two word answer. 1. Click on the person and read. Where do people get energy? Food2. Now click on the chicken. Where does the chicken get energy? Food3. Click on the corn. Where does the corn get energy? Sunlight4. Click on the Sun. How does the Sun get energy? Nuclear reactions As you are answering #1-4 above you will notice, going down the left side of the Gizmo, that a path is shown as a food chain. Fill in that path below. Sun --> Corn --> Chicken --> Person Click Reset on Gizmos and then click on the toaster. Using the Gizmo, create four energy paths that explain how the toaster could get its energy. (One path will only have three objects.) Start by clicking on the toaster, in Gizmos, and end with the sun. After you have finished seeing one path, fill in here (STARTwith Sun and END with the Toaster), then click reset to start a new path in Gizmos. Start all answers with a capital letter. NOTE: Nothing goes in the last two boxes in the last row. Sun Water Dam Toaster Sun Corn Ethanol Plant Toaster Sun Air Wind Turbine Toaster Sun Solar Panel Toaster X X Where does each path begin? What is the ultimate source of energy on earth? Food Sun Water Air Part 3 - Review these Energy terms. Energyis the ability to exert force and cause change. Energy has many forms: - Kinetic energyis energy of motion. All moving things have kinetic energy. -Soundis energy of vibrating materials or air molecules. - Thermalenergy is the energy of tiny moving particles. As an object heats up, particles move faster and thermal energy increases. - Gravitational potential energyis stored energy that exists based on the position of an object. The higher an object is, the greater its gravitational potential energy. (Something can fall) - Electricalcurrent is energy that comes from moving charged particles. - Light (Radiant)is electromagnetic waves that are visible to the eye. - Chemicalenergy is energy that is stored in the bonds holding atoms together. - Nuclearenergy is energy released when atoms split apart or join together.
