Families of Periodic Table WebQUEST
Discover the Periodic Table's families!
Go to The periodic table is organized like a big grid. The periodic table have rows which read from left to right. Each rowand columnhave specific characteristics.Magnesium and Calcium share similarities because they are found in Column Two.Each row is called a period.Elements in the same period have the same number of atomic orbitals.Every element in the first period has oneorbital. All of the elements in the second period has two orbitals. How many atomic orbitals are there that we know of? 1 2 5 7 Periods go from left to right. In class, we called this horizontal. Each vertical column is called a group. The elements in each group have the same number of valence electrons. What are valence electrons? Read the paragraph on Hydrogen. Why is Hydrogen considered "special"? Why is Helium grouped with the Noble Gases? On the right side of the page, towards the top, click on Halogens. Halogens are located in group seventeen. All Halogens have seven valence electrons. They are all one electron short of having a full shell. They are very reactive.Often they will bond with group one because they have one electron that they give up. Which halogen is most reactive? Chlorine Flourine Bromine Iodine What happens to reactivity as you go down a column for Halogens? Click on Noble Gases at the Top or to the right of the page. All Noble Gases, except for Helium, have full shells with eight valence electrons. The fact that their outer shells are full means they don't need to react with other elements. Read the paragraph titled "Who's in the Family?". List one thing, for each Noble Gas, that it is used for in our daily lives. Click on Alkali Metals on the top of the page or on the right side. Hydrogen doesn't belong to any family. It is not an alkali metal.Alkali metals are all very reactive. An increased desire to bond causes an element to be more reactive. Read the 2nd paragraph under "Family Bonding". What are 3 properties of alkali metals? Click on Alkaline Earth metals at the top or to the right of the page. The Alkaline Earth metals are the second most reactive family of elements. What does the word "alkaline" mean? Metals Reactive pH greater than 7 (Basic) Click on "Lanthanide". Why are there two rows at the bottom of the Periodic Table? Click on "Actinide" at the top or to the right of the page. The lanthanide series can be found naturally on earth. The actinide series are all radioactive and some are not found in nature but rather made in labs. Clasify these under the different families they belong to. Alkali Metals Sodium Lithium Potassium one valence electron VERY reactive with water Alkaline Earth Calcium Magnesium Beryillum highly reactive two valence electrons Halogens Chlorine Flourine Iodine Bromine seven valence electrons most reactive nonmetal Noble Gases does not react with anything else Neon Argon Helium Full shell of electrons Krypton Transition Metals Titanium Gold Silver Mercury Metal Nonmetal Metalloid Silver Oxygen Arsenic Gold Hydrogen Boron Sodium Flourine Antimony Magnesium Carbon Silicon
