Task 1. Fill in the blanks with indefinite, definite or zero articles. Use the symbol Ø for zero articles. Otherwise, the system will not recognise your answer as correct. 1 ØCopper (Cu) is achemical element, i.e., areddish, extremely ductile metal of ØGroup 11 (Ib) of theperiodic table that is anunusually good conductor of Øelectricity and Øheat.2 Øelectrical engineering may be said to have emerged as adiscipline in Ø1864 when theScottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell summarized thebasic laws of Øelectricity in Ømathematical form.3 Kenneth S. Polonsky, aprominent diabetes researcher, physician and educator, has been appointed dean of theDivision of Biological Sciences (BSD) and thePritzker School of ØMedicine.4 Thefirst practical application of Øelectricity was thetelegraph, invented by ØSamuel F.B. Morse in Ø1837.5 Thecausality graph is presented in thefollowing figure and theUML diagram is shown in ØFigure 1.6 Solar energy is the radiation from the Sun capable of producing Øheat, causing Øchemical reactions, or generating Ø electricity.7 According to the World Meteorological Organisation, Ø Yuma (Arizona) is the sunniest place on earth.8 Ø World War 2 ended in Ø 1945.9 Ø Dean McLaughlin has recently served as the chair of the Department of English and German Studies at the University of Nottingham.10 He designs Ø software for an Atlanta-based company. Task 2. Fill in the blanks with indefinite, definite or zero articles. Use the symbol Ø for zero articles. Otherwise, the system will not recognise your answer as correct. Benjamin Franklin was aUS statesman and ambassador to ØFrance for theUS, and he also helped to draft theDeclaration of Independence. But he was also ascientist and inventor. Among his many creations were thelightning rod, theglass harmonica, theFranklin stove, Øbiofocal glasses, and theurinary catheter. However, Franklin never patented his inventions because he believed that his inventions should serve others without him making aprofit from it. TheBen Franklin effect is named after him and it describes aperson who is unselfish and concerned for thewell-being of others. His discoveries included his investigations of Øelectricity. He was thefirst to label theelectric charge as positive and negative, and he was thefirst to discover theprinciple of Øconservation of Øcharge. In 1750, he published aproposal for anexperiment to prove that Ølightning is Øelectricity. Theexperiment involved flying akite in astorm. Nobody knows for sure if ØFranklin conducted his famous kite experiment and extracted sparks from acloud. If he did perform theexperiment, he did not do it in theway that is often described, i.e., by flying the kite and waiting to be struck by Ølightning, as this would have been fatal. Task 3. Fill in the blanks with indefinite, definite or zero articles. Use the symbol Ø for zero articles. Otherwise, the system will not recognise your answer as correct. Ø nuclear reactors operate on the principle of Ø nuclear fission, the process in which a heavy atomic nucleus splits into two smaller fragments. The nuclear fragments are in Ø very excited states and emit Ø neutrons, other subatomic particles, and Ø photons. The emitted neutrons may then cause new fissions, which in turn yield more neutrons, and so forth. Such a continuous self-sustaining series of Ø fissions constitutes a fission chain reaction. A large amount of energy is released in this process, and this energy is the basis of Ø nuclear power systems.
