Active vs Passive Transport
Use the word bank to fill in the blanks within the short reading. Homeostasis and Cell FunctionThe process of maintaining stable conditions inside a cell (or an entire organism) is homeostasis. Homeostasis requires adjustments, because conditions are always changing both inside and outside the cell. The membrane is semipermeable allowing substances in and out of the cell. The two processes that move molecules are passive and active transport.Passive transport moves molecules with the concentration gradient. Examples of this include osmosis (water), diffusion, and facilitated diffusion (using a protein). Active transport goes against the concentration gradient and requires ATP (cellular energy). An example of this is a sodium-potassium pump. Place the following into either active or passive transport Passive Transport Does not require energy Goes with the concentration gradient Molecules move from an area of high concentrations to an area of low concentrations Osmosis Facilitated Diffusion Active Transport Does require energy Moves against the concentration gradient Molecules move from a low area of concentration to a high area of concentration ATP Pumps Match the type of transport with the appropriate definition Osmosis The diffusion of water from high to low Diffusion diffusion of smaller molecules from high to low Active Transport The cell uses energy to move particles from low to high concentration Cell Membrane A semipermeable membrane that moves molecules in and out of the cell to maintain homeostasis Facilitated Diffusion Large molecules moving through the membrane from high to low through a protein What transport is being displayed in the image above?
