The Circulatory system • Also called the Cardiovascular System• Consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood• Has three functions1. Carries needed substances to and from cells2. Removes wastes from cells3. Transports immune cells that help fight off bacteria, viruses and other disease causing cells. The Heart • The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. Each time it beats, it pushes blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system• The right side of the heart is completely separated from the left side by a wall of tissue called the septum.• Each side has two compartments, or chambers an upper chamber and a lower chamber. Matching Right atrium receives blood from the body that is low in oxygen and high in carbon dioxide Right ventricle pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs Septum prevents oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood from mixing Left atrium oxygen-rich blood moves from the lungs into the left atrium Left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body Fill in the blanks There are two loops for blood flow.In the first loop blood travels from the heart to the lungs and then back to the heart.The blood is oxygenpoor but carbon dioxiderich which makes it dark redin colorThe blood reaches the lungs in capillaries where carbon dioxide moves into the lungs to be oxygenated.The oxygen rich blood is bright redin color and flows in a vein and back to the heart.In the second loop, blood is pumped from the heart throughout the body and then back to the heart.Oxygen rich blood is pumped from the left ventricle in the heart and into the aorta.The blood will flow to the capillaries in different parts of your body.Oxygen moves out of the blood and into the body cells at the same time as carbon dioxide moves from the body cells to the blood.Now the oxygen poor blood moves back to the right atrium of the heart.
