Events of Texas Statehood From Annexation to the Compromise of 1850

Though the United States did want to expand west as a result of the idea of Manifest Destiny, there was disagreement over the inclusion of Texas. Many people in the United States feared the annexation of Texas for three major reasons. One was that Texas allowed slavery within its borders. Slavery was a hot topic at that time between the Free and Slave states already in the US. Another was the issue of Texas debt. The debt was around 10 million dollars, which some citizens had a problem with. The last was the treat of war with Mexico if the United States annexed Texas. In 1848, gold was discovered in California, and the population of California grew very quickly. People began to question whether California should be a slave state or free state. The debate over slavery continued. The South wanted more of the area won from Mexico to be slave states. The North, of course, disagreed. In 1850, Henry Clay devised a compromise plan to settle the issue. The Compromise of 1850 had five provisions:1. California would be admitted as a free state. This restored the balance of free and slave states.2.The slave trade - not slavery - would be prohibited in Washington, DC3. The remaining new territory acquired from Mexico would be divided into two territories - New Mexico Territory and Utah Territory - and Congress would not decide if these territories would be free or slave territory. The people who settled in these territories would decide for themselves when they asked to become a state. This was called popular sovereignty. 4. A new, harsher fugitive slave law was passed. It made hiding or helping runaway slaves illegal and punishable by a high fine or imprisonment.5. Texas gave up part of its territory in exchange for $10 million to pay off its debt.
