Drawing Bohr & Lewis Electron Dot Structures
Master Bohr and Lewis electron dot structures! Practice drawing atomic models and identifying valence electrons.
How to Draw: Bohr Diagrams Step 1: Determine the number of protons neutrons in your atom. Protons 9 Electrons 9 Neutrons 10 Step 2: Draw the Bohr model using the number of electrons How can we describe the Bohr model without drawing it? One way is to share HOW MANY electrons are in each orbital, or SHELL. We call that theelectron configuration. We ALWAYS start from the first shell (closest to the nucleus) and work our way out.For example, the electron configuration for Fluorine is 2-7 which means that there are 2 electrons in the first shell (closest to nucleus) and 7 in the second shell. Try one on your own! Draw the Bohr Diagram for an atom of Boron (B). Let's try ONE more! :) Draw a Bohr diagram for an atom of Silicon (Si). Ok...now to try some LEWIS [ELECTRON] DOT DIAGRAMS!psst - we'll call them LES for short. These are SUPER convenient, because we only need to write down the element SYMBOL AND draw dots for VALENCE ELECTRONS ONLY! But...WAIT...WHAT ARE VALENCE ELECTRONS!? Valence electrons live in the OUTERMOST ELECTRON SHELL. These electrons are represented by the LAST number in the electron configuration. For Fluorine, we found that the electron configuration is 2-7,so Fluorine has 7 valence electrons. Alright, now it's time for Lewis Electron Dot Structures (shortened to LES).Here is a short video on drawing Lewis Electron dot structures Try a couple on your own! Complete the Lewis Structures for these elements below by first drawing the Bohr model for each element.
