Introduction to Cell Division
Interphase The first stage of Mitosis is Interphase, where cells replicate their DNA in the nucleus and prepare to divide. In the cell below please draw the following:- uncondensed DNA- nucleus Prophase The second stage of Mitosis is prophase, where DNA fibers condense to become chromosomes and spindle fibers form while the nuclear membrane begins to break down. In the cell below, please draw the following:- 2 chromosomes- degrading nuclear membrane- spindle fibers Metaphase The third stage of Mitosis is metaphase, where the nuclear membrane has completely degraded and the spindle fibers line the chromosomes in the middle of the cell. In the cell below, please draw the following:- spindle fibers- 2 chromosomes Anaphase The fourth stage of Mitosis is anaphase, where the spindle fibers begin to pull apart the individual sister chromatids of the chromosomes towards opposite ends of the cell. In the cell below, please draw the following:- spindle fibers pulling apart the two chromosomes (into two sets of individual sister chromatids) Telophase Cytokinesis The final stage of Mitosis is telophase where the chromatids reach opposite poles of the cell and two new nuclear membranes form around them. Cytokinesis then occurs when the cell membrane pinches together and separates the cytoplasm of the two daughter cells.
