Our solar system is made up of the sun and all the celestial bodies that orbit around it due to its: force heat light gravity Write the correct name on each celestial body. You will need to spell correctly. Sun Mercury Venus Neptune Pluto Uranus Saturn Mars Earth Moon Jupiter List each planetary body under the category it belongs. Inner Rocky Planets Mercury Venus Earth Mars Outer Gas Giants Jupiter Saturn Outer Ice Giants Uranus Neptune Dwarf Planets Pluto Eris Ceres Makemake Haumea Fill in the blanks in the following paragraph. (Remember to scroll down to see the complete word list!) Our solar system consists of the sun, eight planets and five dwarf planets (and their moons), an asteroid belt, and many comets and meteors. The Sun is the center of our Solar System. Fill in the blanks in the following paragraph. Remember to scroll down in the word bank to see the entire list. The planets that orbit the sun are (in order from the Sun): Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter (the biggest planet in our Solar System), Saturn (with large, orbiting rings), Uranus, Neptune, and the dwarf planet Pluto (along with other dwarf planets). A belt of asteroids (many minor planets made of rock and metal) orbits between Mars and Jupiter. These objects all orbit the Sun in roughly circular orbits that lie in the same plane, called the ecliptic (Pluto is an exception to this; it has an elliptical orbit that is tilted over 17° from the ecliptic). Fill in the blanks in the following paragraph. Remember to scroll down in the word list to see all the words. The inner planets planets (those planets that orbit close to the Sun) are quite different from the outer planets (those planets that orbit far from the Sun). The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are relatively small, composed mostly of rock, and have few or no moons. The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. They are either gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn), or ice giants (Uranus and Neptune). These outer planets are all ringed, and have many moons. Pluto, once considered the ninth and most distant planet from the sun, is now the largest known dwarf planet in the solar system. Its home is the Kuiper Belt , a region of icy and rocky bodies past Neptune. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet when it was determined that to be classed as a planet, a celestial body must orbit the sun, and must have sufficient mass to be round (or nearly round), is not a satellite (moon) of another object and has enough gravity to clear its orbit. This means its gravity has removed debris and small objects from the area around its orbit. Our solar system has five dwarf planets. Pluto, Eris, Makemake and Haumea are in the Kuiper Belt and one (Ceres) is in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Other Solar System Bodies Match the solar system body with its definition. Comets These objects made of rock and ice have a dust tail that glows when they approach the sun. Asteroids Smaller than a planet or dwarf planet, these rock and metal objects orbit the sun. Meteors Often called shooting stars, these small rocky object burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. Unique Characteristics of Planets Sort the characteristics of the planets (they each have three facts). Mercury Closest planet to the sun Has no atmosphere so its surface is covered with meteor craters. Gravitationally locked to the sun on its orbit. Venus Hottest planet in the atmosphere Known as Earth's 'twin' due to its similar size. Thick, sulfurous atmosphere. Earth Only planet with water in all three forms available. Only planet known to support life. Only planet not named after a mythical god. Mars Has two moons. Known as the 'red planet' due to the rust in the soil on its surface. Home of the solar systems largest volcano, Olympus Mons. Jupiter Largest and most massive planet in the solar system. Has a raging storm known as the Great Red Spot. Named after the Roman King of the Gods. Saturn Has the most visible and spectacular system of rings. Second largest planet in the solar system. Named after the Father of the Roman King of the Gods. Uranus First planet to be discovered and named after the invention of the telescope. Rotates on its side due to its unusual tilt. Coldest planet in the solar system Neptune Named after the Roman God of the Sea due to its blue color. Planet whose existence was predicted using math! Has two storms similar to the Great Red Spot, except they are blue.
