Make a list of social media platforms. Rank them from most important (to you personally) to least important. Drag the pros and cons of social media into their correct columns. These are different arguments and positions that real people have made, all supported by statistics and evidence. Pros of social media Colleges and universities use social media to recruit and retain students social media sites help students do better at school Corporations and small businesses use social media to benefit themselves and consumers Social media can help address discrimination Social media helps people who are socially isolated or shy Crowdsourcing on social media allows people to collectively accomplish a goal Cons of social media Social media harms employees' productivity Criminals use social media to commit and promote crimes Social media causes people to spend less time interacting face-to-face social media can lead to stress and offline relationship problems Social media enables the spread of unreliable and false information People who use social media are more likely to suffer from social isolation Make a list of other pros and cons of social media and give a reason why you say that (your opinion). Fill in the blanks to revise your understanding of the key parts of persuasive writing... If you had the most dazzling skills of persuasion, you could probably convince Donald Trump to quit Twitter, recruit an army of volunteers to build your own fortress, or inspire millions of people to donate money to worthy causes, all with the power of words and stories.Ok, so maybe you couldn't do all of this, but one thing you've learnt already about persuasive writing is to hook readers in to engage their interest (which I hope I did just now). This could be done with a story, with humour, or with a powerful question. When I write an opinion piece, I'm not just expressing information, I'm presenting my own point of view. I'm taking a stand on an issue. My contention responds to an issue. It's my overall perspective on the issue, and I try to back it up with arguments to make it rock solid. An issue is something that is factual, (it's actually happening), and it's concerning a group of people. For example: the coronavirus death toll is increasing and has just reached 3000.A contention responding to this could be: "We need to be stricter about the spread of contagious diseases."When you write a persuasive piece of writing, you need evidence to support your different reasons. My arguments always link to my contention so that my reasoning is consistent and powerful.A powerful way to relate to your audience is by storytelling. When you tell a story, you communicate ideas in more engaging ways that tap into the emotions of the audience and make them care. Write a letter to your friend that would persuade him to stop the use of social media.
