What is your name? Ions - School Fuse Video Watch the video about ions (link below). Fill in the blanks. The blanks have a pull down menu with word choices. Just click. Remember to fully scroll. Once you've used the word, the background of the word will turn gray. If it's on there more than once, it will be used more than once. Just be sure to click on the word with the white background. The Chemistry Journey Section 1: An atom will have a charge if it gains or loses electronsand is called an ion. If an atom loses electrons the atom will have a positivecharge and is called a cation. If an atom gains electrons it will have a negativecharge and is called an anion.Sodium has a total of eleven electrons and one of the electrons is in the valenceshell. Sodium will lose the onevalence electron because it's easier to lose one than to gain 7. When it gives up the electron it becomes a positivelycharged ion. Oxygen has a total of eight electrons and sixof the electrons are in the valence shell. Oxygen will gaintwo electrons because it is easier to gain two than to lose six. When it acceptsthe electron it becomes a negativelycharged ion. Section 2: Metals tend to lose electrons to become cations. All elements in group 1, with its one valence electron, such as sodium, will lose an electron to form an ion with a plus one charge. All elements in group 2, with two valence electrons, such as magnesium, lose two electrons to form an ion with a plus two charge.Nonmetals tend to gain electrons to form anions. All elements in group 6, which has six valence electrons, such as oxygen, will gain two electrons and form an ion with a negative two charge. All elements in group 7, which has seven valence electrons, such as fluorine, will gain one electron and form an ion with a negative one charge. All elements in group 13 such as aluminium, which has three valence electrons, will lose three electrons to form an ion with a positive three charge. All elements in group 15, such as nitrogen, which has five valence electrons will gain three electrons and form an ion with a negative three charge.
