The warm moist air carried by the trade winds reaches the coastline and continues to travel inland. The warm moist air approaches high relief and rises. As the warm moist air rises, it cools and condenses to form rain clouds such as nimbostratus and cumulonimbus rain clouds. Precipitation "rainfall" occurs on the high relief area. This forms a low pressure system. Cold air escapes the low pressure system, as it travels the other side of the high relief area e.g mountains, it depletes itself of any moisture. With some distances from the high relief the cold air becomes dense and sinks. The cold dry air sinks forming an area of high pressure. The cold dense air is dry and it can't condense to form rain clouds and therefore brings no rain, making the area warm and dry. This area is called the rain shadow.
