The Battle of the Alamo for Kids Use the link to fill in the blanks of the passage. Duckster: The Battle of the Alamo The Battle of the Alamo was fought between the Republic of Texas and Mexico. It was dated from February 23, 1836 to March 6, 1836. It took place in a fort in San Antonio, Texas called the Alamo. All the Texan soldiers were killed inside the fort. The Mexicans won the battle.The Alamo was built in the 1700's as a home for Spanish missionaries. American settlers came in San Antonio in the 1820's and began to settle the area. Mexico won its independence from Spain the year of 1821. Texas was a part of Mexico, and Mexico had a government that was similar to the United States. Many Americans moved to Texas to become Mexican citizens. A powerful Mexican took control over the government in 1832. The Texans did not like the new ruler, Santa Anna. The Texans declared their independence on March 2, 1836. Santa Anna had an army march into Texas to take it back. Santa Anna was the leader of the Mexican forces. He led approximately 1,800 troops. James Bowie and Lieutenant Colonel William B. Travis led the Texans. They had around 200 Texans defending the Alamo. This included the famous folk hero, Davy Crockett.The Alamo sat on about three acres of land with a wall between 9-12 feet tall surrounding it. Buildings were inside the fort, including a chapel, a hospital room, barracks for soldiers, and a horse corral. There were cannons along the top of the building.On February 23, 1836 General Santa Anna and his troops arrived and laid siege to the fort for thirteen days. The Texans tried to fend off the attacks. However, there were too many Mexican soldiers. The Mexicans won the fight killing every soldier in the fort. Although Texas lost the battle, it turned the rest of Texas against Mexico and General Santa Anna. A few months later, Sam Houston led the Texans to victory over Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. The battle cry "Remember the Alamo" kept the Texans strong. During the 1870's the Alamo was used as a warehouse. Today it is a famous tourist destination.
