TLT: Chapter 19

As the trio get farther into the Underworld, Grover’s flying shoes suddenly come to life and try to drag him into the same pit from Percy’s dream. They manage to unlace the shoes, and they fall into the pit. Annabeth says the pit must be an entrance to Tartarus. The trio decide to keep going and pass through the Garden of Persephone, (Purse-eff-funny), wife of Hades and Goddess of Spring, and find themselves in the Palace of Hades. He is waiting for them on his throne, and Percy notices he resembles famous conquerers like Adolf Hitler and Napoleon. Similar to Ares, Percy is affected by his aura, only this one makes him want to obey Hades. The trio asks Hades not to start a war with the gods, but Hades reveals that he isn't the lightning thief that his own Helm of Darkness has been stolen. He accuses Percy of stealing the helm because he already has the master bolt. Percy opens the backpack he got from Ares and is shocked to find the master bolt inside. Hades offers Percy his mother in exchange for this and the return of his Helm, but Percy refuses. He, Grover, and Annabeth use the three pearls to magically teleport out of the Underworld and back to the Santa Monica beach. The Greeks believed that immortal gods and titans could not die, but instead faded away. After the Titan War, Zeus cut Kronos into pieces and threw those pieces into Tartarus. Then he gathered up all of Kronos's allies from the war and gave them a choice. If they swore allegiance to Zeus, they could stay on Olympus. If they refused to swear allegiance to him, they would be cast into Tartarus. Most of the titans swore allegiance to Zeus. Other titans such as Hyperion, Krios, and Koios stayed loyal to Kronos and were thrown into Tartarus.In the Percy Jackson series, Annabeth says that monsters go there when they die, but that they can be resurrected after a period of time.
