כדי לבטא שפעולה התרחשה בעבר נוסיף לפועל ed יש שלושה מקרים בהם נוסיף לפועל את תוספת ה ed קצת אחרת.מקרים אלה נקראים חוקי איות.חוק איות ראשון: חוק איות שני: תזכורת - אותיות הניקוד הן: a, e, i, o, u כל שאר האותיות הן אותיות עיצור. חוק איות שלישי:תזכורת: C - אות עיצור V - אות ניקוד a, e, i, o, u התאימו בין הסיומת של הפועל לתוספת המתאימה בעבר הפשוט. הפועל מסתיים באות "e" נוסיף לפועל רק את האות "d" הפועל מסתיים באות "y" ולפניה יש אות עיצור נוריד את ה "y", נשים במקומה את האות "i" ואחריה "ed". פועל קצר המתסתיים ב אות עיצור, תנועה, עיצור נכפיל עיצור אחרון לפני הוספת "ed" הפועל מסתיים באות "y" ולפניה אות תנועה נוסיף "ed" פועל ארוך המסתיים ב "cvc" אבל הדגש בהגיה הוא על תחילת הפועל למרות שהפועל מסתיים ב "cvc" לא נכפיל עיצור אחרון, נוסיף כרגיל "ed" 1.
