First, click HERE to be watch a quick review of yesterday's lesson and an introduction to the exponential equation and some application examples for today's lesson. 1) Below is the formula for exponential growth, as discussed in the video above. Click on the blue dots and identify the meaning of each component of the equation as one of the following: time intervals, initial value, growth rate. 2) If y = 3(1.25)x , what is the initial value? 3) If y = 3(1.25)x , what is the growth rate? Remember, the growth rate is just the "r" value in the equation. Write this value as a percentage below. 4) Evaluate y = 3(1.25)x , when x = 2. In other words what is the value of the equation when you substitute 2 in for the x variable. 5) The foundation of your house has about 1,200 termites. The termite population is growing at a rate of 3% per day. Write an exponential equation in the form y = a(1+r)x that models this situation. 6) Based on the equation you wrote for #5, what would the termite population be after 7 days (1 week)? That is, with the time interval (x value) being 7, what is the y value? Please either type your work below, write out your work on a separate piece of paper, or voice record yourself explaining your work. 7) Your friend has lice in her hair! She goes to the doctor and they determine there are currently 60 lice and they project the number of lice will grow 5.5% daily without any treatment. Write an exponential equation in the form y = a(1+r)x that models this situation. 8) Based on the equation you wrote for #7, if your friend did not use treatment, what would the lice population be after 14 days (2 weeks)? That is, with the time interval (x value) being 14, what is the y value? Please either type your work below, write out your work on a separate piece of paper, or voice record yourself explaining your work. Select one of the choices below that best describe how you feel after today's lesson. Great job! You've made it to the end. Be sure to click the "Hand in Work" button TWICE! The first time you click it, it will ask you to confirm your work. Then, you must click "Confirm Hand In Work" to submit your responses!
