Go to The periodic table is organized like a big grid.The periodic table has rows which read from left to right.Each rowand columnhave specific characteristics.Magnesium and Calcium share similarities because they are found in column two.Each row is called a period.Elements in the same periodic table have the same number of atomic orbitals.Every element in the first period hasoneorbital. All of the elements in the second period have two orbitals. Periods go from left to right. This is also called horizontal.Each vertical column is called a group.The elements in each group have the same number of valence electrons. What are valence electrons? Read the paragraph on Hydrogen.
