The Allies Won! Now What??? Tension started at the end of WWII. The USA wanted the lands freed fromthe Axis Powers to rule themselves and set up democratic governments withcapitalist economies. The Soviet Union wanted to influence these newly freedcountries to become communist governments with socialist economic systems.One major issue was what was to be done with Germany at the end of war onceit surrendered. World War 2 started when Germany, led by Hitler invaded Poland. At the beginning of the war the United States was neutral. However the United States began to help Britain and the Allies by giving them weapons and aid through the Lend-Lease Act.The United States did not agree with Japans invasions of China and Manchuria. The United States placed an embargo on Japan. The United States joined WWII when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. President Roosevelt said that this would be a day that would live in infamy. European Theater World War 2 was the Allied Powers (United States, Britain, Soviet Union) against the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan). The United States and the Allies had a principle war strategy to defeat Hitler first. The turning point in the war in Europe was the Battle of Stalingrad. The liberation of Europe from Hitler began with DDay invasion of Normandy off the coast of France. Germany was finally defeated at the Battle of the Bulge. Pacific Theater After defeating Germany the Allies focused on the Pacific theater. The Allies focused on targeting specific Pacific islands in a strategy known as island hopping. The Battle of Midway ended the Japanese threat to Hawaii. The Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa brought the United States closer to a direct attack on Japan. Instead of directly attacking Japan President Truman decided to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. The reason for dropping the atomic bomb is that Truman wanted to avoid large American casualties in an invasion of Japan. The first city bombed with an atomic bomb was Hiroshima. Japan did not surrender so the US dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Japan surrendered after Nagasaki was bombed, ending WWII. American Troops During World War 2, African Americans served in segregated units. The name of the highly-decorated African American pilots in WWII were known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The name of the segregated Japanese American soldiers were known as the Nisei regiments. The United States wanted to create a communication code that the Japanese could not break, so they had Navajo code-talkers use their tribal language for communication. Homefront During WWII the mobilization in the US for the war in Europe and Asia was possible because the close working relationship between government and industry. Businesses made wartime mobilization their top priority by switching from peacetime to wartime production. The United States used rationing (limiting) to provide more resources for the military. In order to pay for the war, the US government relied on the sale of war bonds. In order to maintain public morale the US used propaganda (posters, ads, movies) and collections of tin cans and aluminum foil. Because men left for the armed forces, women and minorities entered the workforce. Many African Americans wanted job opportunities in war plants so they migrated to cities. Many women joined the workforce and Rosie the Riveter became their symbol. End of the War The Geneva Convention established rules governing the treatment of prisonersof war. Japan did not follow these rules. When Japan invaded the Philippines, they made US and Filipino troops march thousands of miles. This became known as the BataanDeath March, resulting in death of thousands of soldiers.In response to strong anti-Japanese sentiments in the United States, President Roosevelt removed people of Japanese ancestry and placed them in internment camps. The US apologized for this in 1988 and paid those affected $20,000 with the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.
