When olfactory receptors are stimulated, neurons in the olfactory bulb send an impulse to the brain along the olfactory nerve (pathway is called the olfactory tract). These impulses are received in the temporal and frontal lobes of the cerebrum for processing and interpretation. Taste buds are the organs of taste. They are composed of modified epithelial cells that function as chemoreceptors. Each taste bud contains 50-100 taste cells which are also called gustatory cells. There are 5 main types of sensory cells each detecting a unique taste sensation – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory). Gustatory cells contain microvilli or "taste hairs" which protrude from openings called taste pores. Chemicals must be dissolved in salivato bind to the receptors on the taste cell. This stimulates neurons in the tongue to release neurotransmitters and send an impulse via the facial, vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves to the thalamus.
