Master speciation! Identify geographic, temporal, and behavioral isolation patterns.

VOCABULARY - Speciation Match each term to its definition. The process by which a new kind of plant or animal species is created. A collection of evolutionary mechanisms, behaviors, and physiological processes critical for speciation. A mechanism that prevents species from mating because they breed at different times, e.g., time of day, season, or even different years. Occurs when two populations that are capable of interbreeding develop differences in courtship rituals or other behaviors. Occurs when two populations (animals or plants) are separated by geographic barriers such as rivers, mountains, canyons and bodies of water. REPRODUCTIVE ISOLATION Identify which type of reproductive isolation is being shown in each example. GEOGRAPHIC Two species of squirrels get stranded on either side of a grand canyon. Two species of mountain lions live in a forest on either side of a large river. Ten species of finches live on the Galapagos Islands. TEMPORAL Two species of plants sprout from the ground at different months in the year. Two species of foxes mate in different seasons. Two species of beetles come out at different times of the day. BEHAVIORAL Two species of fireflies come out between the hours of 9-11 p.m. Each species has a unique pattern of flashes that attracts a mate. Two species of frogs call from the water at the pond’s edge for a female. Two species of songbirds call from a tree for a potential mate. Two species of bowerbirds construct elaborate nests to attract a mate. What type of reproductive isolation is being displayed in the image?
