Discover the Neolithic Revolution! Learn about farming, settled life, and early trade.

In the Paleolithic Era, early humans were nomadic and had to move from place to place, following herds and finding plants. By the time of he end of the last Ice Age, around 8000 b.c., the Neolithic Era (or the New Stone Age) began. During the Neolithic Era,humans began planting crops, providing a regular food source. They also domesticated (or tamed and raised for food) animals, adapting them for human use. Animals became a reliable source of meat, milk, and wool. Animals could also be used to do work. Growing crops and taming food-producing animals caused an agricultural revolution - humans changed from hunters and gatherers to farmers. Some early farmers used slash-and-burn farming. With this method, farmers would cut trees and grasses and burn them to clear a field. The ashes would fertilize the soil (or make the soil good for farming). They would plant crops for a year or two and then move to a new field to create more good soil for farming.Because there was enough food, humans had more control over their lives. They could also stop being nomadic and could live in settled communities. Some historians believe this revolution (complete change) was the single most important development in human history.Growing crops on a regular basis meant more early humans were living in settled communiteis called Neolithic farming villages. These villages appeared in Europe, India, Egypt, China, and Mesoamerica. The oldest and biggest villages, however, were located in Southwest Asia. Jericho, near the Dead Sea, was in existence by 8000 b.c. Çatalhüyük in modern Turkey was an even larger community, covering 32 acres (12.9 ha). Between 6700 b.c. and 5700 b.c., the city probably had 6,000 inhabitants. Their simple mud brick houses were built so close together that there were few streets. People walked on the roofs and entered their homes through holes in the rooftops.People people did not have to spend all of their time hunting and gathering for food, some people became artisans, or skilled workers, making goods to trade with neighboring people. These goods were bartered (traded), or exchanged, and not sold. This was the beginning of a traditional economy based on agriculture and some trade. Artisans created goods like pottery, jewelry, and developed weaving skills. They also developed advanced tools.
