Rate of Change Believe it or not, you already have a pretty awesome understanding of Rate of Change. Rate of Change is basically what you all know as slope. Throughout this lesson, I would like you all to do each of the following learning assignments so you can understand Rate of Change. Calculating the Rate of Change for a Linear Function Check out the following video and see what you can discover about Rate of Change. How do you find the Rate of Change between two points? Did you already know this? What did you learn about Rate of Change from the video? Was there a formula you already knew about? If so, tell me more about this formula. What is the Rate of Change between the two points (3, 2) and (5, 10)? Hint: Slope Formula! 4 -4 12 Rate of Change Notes Check out the image above and take notes on your graphic organizer. All four parts discuss something about Rate of Change so make sure you write everything down!!! What is the definition for Rate of Change? Rate of Change (Slope) Draw the formula for Rate of Change and submit your work. Creating a Table and Indentfiying the Rate of Change Create a table using the following ordered pairs:(0, 0) (1, 7.5) (2, 15) (3, 22.5) (4, 30) (5, 37.5) Domain (x) Range (y) 0 0 1 7.5 2 15 3 22.5 4 30 5 37.5 How much are the domains changing by each time? How much are the ranges changing by each time? Which of the following would be the Rate of Change for the table above? 7.5 10 -7.5 Rate of Change in a Table When looking at a table remember to look at "the change in y" over "the change in x". Subtracting two ranges and subtracting two domains will determine your Rate of Change in a problem. Did you notice any resemblances between the table and an arithmetic sequence? What do the domains represent in a table? What do the ranges represent in the table? What is the Rate of Change (Slope) in the following function?f(x) = 3x + 1 3 1 -3 Rate of Change in a Function To find the Rate of Change in a function, check the function and make sure it is in slope-intercept form. The Rate of Change will be located where the slope normally is.
