Energy - The Ability to do Work It can be hard to do any sort of work when you are low on energy. As we have just learned WORK = FORCE x DISTANCE. To apply a force we need to have energy. There are many different types of energy; the energy we get from eating a burger, the energy of wind that drives a wind turbine and the energy of the sun that plants use to fuel their growth. In this worksheet we will learn about a few different types of energy.Potential EnergyPotential energy is energy that is stored and is not currently being used. Examples of this include; the energy stored in the chemical bonds of food (chemical potential energy), the energy stored in an object that has been lifted off the ground (gravitational potential energy) or the energy stored in a stretched out rubber band (elastic potential energy).Kinetic EnergyKinetic energy is the energy of motion. A cricket ball flying through the air has kinetic energy. Similarly, a car travelling along the highway has s large amount of kinetic energy. Classify the following as kinetic or potential energy Potential Energy Kinetic Energy Calculating Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) We can calculate the amount of gravitational potential energy an object has quite easily using the following equation: GPE (j) = mass x accleration due to gravity x height GPE = mghAcceleration due to gravity is pretty much the same anywhere you go on Earth, 9.8 m "g" is always equal to 9.8. So we can calculate GPE if we know the mass of the object and how high it is off the ground. For example, my 0.2kg textbook is stored 2m off the ground on my bookshelf. How much GPE does it have? GPE = m x g x h = 0.2 x 9.8 x 2 = 3.92 jIt is important to remember that height is always in metres and mass is always in kg. A 1000kg boulder is perched on top of a 10m cliff. How much GPE does it have? 98 000 j 10 000 j 100 000 j 9 800 j A 60kg olympic diver is about to jump from a 15m diving board. How much GPE do they have? 6 800 j 12 440 j 8 820 j 11 500 j A 350 000kg Boeing passenger aircraft is flying 9 440m in the air. How much GPE does it have? 4506795000 j 31363400000 j 31363920000 j 120800360 j
