Master blood types! Learn about plasma, red blood cells, and how to donate safely.

Read the following paragraph and fill in the blanks with the appropriate terms. Use your Forensic Serology notes if needed! Blood has four major components. Plasma which is the liquid portion of blood that contains nutrients, hormones, gases and waste. Blood also contains three different formed elements. Erythrocytes have a functional protein called hemoglobin whose job is to carry oxygen. Leukocytes have very specific jobs but the main purpose of all white blood cells is to fight foreign invaders. Platelets are the cell fragments that aid in clotting blood. Use the following blood type chart to complete the following blood type and blood donation chart. The surface of red blood cells have carbohydrate markers called antigens. Those antigens will produce functional proteins called antibodies that will fight foreign invaders. Blood type A has the A antigen on its surface and will produce the B antibody. Blood type A cannot receive blood from any type with a B in its name because the antibodies will see that donation as a foreign type. Blood type B has the B antigen on its surface and will make A antibodies. A person with blood type B can receive blood from types B and O. Blood type AB is the universal recipient because it has no blood antibodies. Blood type O is the universal donor because it has no blood antigens. Blood cell information matching Please match the term with it's definition ABO blood typing classification system Erythrocytes another term for red blood cell Hemoglobin the oxygen carrying protein found in abundance within RBCs O negative the universal donor RH Factor RBC antigen that may or may not be present. If present, the individual is said to be Rh positive
