There were about 2200 people onboard on the night when it sank and only about 700 of them survived. Mum: There weren't enough lifeboats, were there?Sally: That's right. And the captain of the nearest ship thought there was a party on the Titanic so they didn't cometo the rescue straight away. Mum: How tragic! What else did you learn?Sally: Well, I know that the ship began the journey in England on 10th April 1912. The captain wanted to set a speed record to they travelled very fast. They hit an iceberg on the fourth day. At first, people didn't believethe sip would sink, so they went on partying. Mum: I remember that the band played until the ship sank. Sally: Yes, that's true. Mum: It would be interesting to see what it looked like. Sally: They found it, you know, in 1985. They tried to lift it up, but they couldn't. Anyway, they recorded everything and you can see what it looks like today.
