In England the King is at the top of the social pyramid. He provides leadership and protection to the citizens of his land. He gives land to Nobleswho provide their loyalty and military support in return. Knights serve the land owners both as police and soldiers. Peasants do most of the work including farming, making clothes , and making tools. The reformation began when Martin Luther posted his 95 Thesis in Wittenburg, Germany. This listed his complaints against the church. Among his complaints were indulgences, which allowed you to buy forgiveness and the practice of selling or displaying relics with paid admission. The first group of protestants to split away from the church took on his name as Lutherans, even though he only sought change not separation from the Roman Catholic Church. During the Renaissance or rebirth of classic culture many famous artists arose. They focused on the ancient works of Greece and Rome for inspiration. Their works included Humanism which focused on the accomplishments of man rather than the church. Additionally these artists focused on achieving realism in their works avoiding the supernatural or the divine. Artists of this era lived in city-states and made a living off of commissioned work for patrons such as the Medici family. Perhaps the best example of a polymath or "renaissance man" would be Da Vinci.
