‪Energy Forms and Changes‬ We have looked at the different forms that energy takes. Today we are going to discover how different forms of energy can change into electrical energy to generate useful electricity. There are other ways that energy can move and change. Click on the picture to the left to use the Phet simulation. WHEN the SIMULATION OPENS , SELECT “Systems”. Introducing the Simulation Click on Energy Symbols to see the energy packets. Spend a few minutes playing with the simulation. - Try selecting different energy sources - Moving water (faucet) - Solar (Sun) - Steam (kettle) - Chemical (person on bike)- Try selecting different energy changers - Generator - Solar panel- Try selecting different energy users - Heating water - Light bulb (standard bulb) - Light bulb (compact fluorescent light) - Motor By manipulating this simulation, you will build an energy system and describe what happens to the energy as it moves through the system.Fill in the table below with the correct forms of energy (most are only one form, all are capitalized) by following the energy packets in the simulation. The first row is completed for you. Energy Source Form of Energy Energy Changer Form of Energy Energy User Form of energy Moving water Mechanical Generator Electrical Light Bulb Thermal and Light Moving Water Mechanical Generator Electrical Fan Mechanical Sun Light Solar Panel Electrical Hot Plat with water Thermal Girl on Bike Mechanical and Thermal Generator Electrical Light Bulb (CFL) Thermal and Light Tea Pot Mechanical and Thermal Generator Electrical Light Bulb Thermal and Light What kind of energy does the biker contain? Mechanical Electrical Theremal Light Chemical The biker converts chemical energy into mechanical energy. Yesterday we talked about radiant energy. Which of the energies from today is the same as radiant? Mechanical Electrical Theremal Light Chemical Efficiency is how well a device transfer energy into a useful form. Compare energy output between the fluorescent bulb (curly one) with the incandescent bulb (rounded). Which bulb is more efficient and why? The Law of Conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed it only changes form. How does this simulation show this?
