Acids and Bases Watch the video for an introduction to acids and bases. Perform the interactive lab linked here: refer to the following information: sort the terms. Acids Turns Red Litmus Blue Phenothalein is clear Reacts with metals Tastes sour Bases Turns Blue Litmus Red Phenothalein is pink Tastes Bitter Feels Slippery Acids Finish the tutorial linked above and then answer the following questions in complete sentences. Acids on the molecular level. Explain what happens to an acid when dissolved in water. (The example given is HCl) Describe what is formed, what happens to the particles, and why. You may need to refer to the PhET activity on covalent and ionic bonding. What is a "hydronium ion" and how does it form? Be specific. How is this similar and how is this different than forming an ionic compound? (you should mention how ions are formed in ionic bonding between metals and non-metals and how this differs) Descibe the motion of the water and the ions in solution. Be specific. You should make reference to what you have previously learned about the dissolving of ionic compounds. Refer to the PhET animations if needed. In what ways does acetic acid differ from HCl acid. Be specific making reference to what happens in the animation, and how the compound behaves. For example, which one divides completely and why? When you answer this consider ideas like polarity, electron density, and electronegativity in your answers. (Yes, you have to remember what you did previously).
